My favorite restaurant in Alden has got to be Darrow’s. Now I could go on and on about the owner and his son, but let’s focus on what really matters here; the restaurant business. First of all, the history of the restaurant is significant. It happens to be one of the oldest buildings in the town. It has also had multiple purposes, such as being a hotel, and some people even say that it was a funeral home at one point. In 2009, Peter Darrow transformed the Alden Bar and Grille into Darrow’s, the restaurant that we know and love today. I eat at this restaurant pretty often for multiple reasons. First of all, there really aren’t many options in this small town. The major restaurants are GDI’s, Town & Country and the West Alden Kitchen. Another reason that I eat there is because the food is really, really good. First off, the mac and cheese is stellar. You have got to love those cheesy noodles. Next, the burgers put McDonald’s to shame. They are pretty huge and tasty. The quesadillas are excellent as well. They fit so much meat (whether it be steak, beef or chicken) between those tortillas. And the dipping salsa that comes as a side with the sour cream and parsley on top is to die for. My personal favorite food at Darrow’s is actually an appetizer believe it or not. I’m a huge fan of the clams. They taste amazing at this place. The sauce is excellent. I’m not totally sure what’s in it, but there’s definitely a large amount of melted butter. It really completes the combination. Another thing that I like about Darrow’s is the fact that they have Birch Beer. It’s kind of like root beer, except its way better. You just have to love that place.
