Choice, October 9

For my choice blog this week, I would like to talk about the painting that hangs in the corner of this room. The painting is titled Entre Les Trous De La Mémoire, and the artist is Dominique Appia. The title can be translated to “don’t burn your bridges behind you” or even “Enjoy your memories”. The style of this art work is known as surrealism.  Dominique Appia is a Swiss painter. Little is known about this man. Some people believe that the painting is from a dream like scenario.  This statement makes a lot of sense if you were to glance at the image that hangs above the head of our own Jake Woj, you’ll see two young girls. Well, you’ll see their head, neck, arms and legs anyway. The places where clothing belong blends into the floor board, and it appears to make these girls ghostly.  One of the girls has a fire going in the middle of the hardwood floor, which is peculiar since there is a fire place just a few feet away. I suppose that this isn’t such a major problem though, since water is flowing towards the fire from a hallway. If you look closely behind the red door, you’ll see this stream is coming from an open body of water, most likely an ocean. In the ocean is a large ship. Above this unused fire place is a mirror with a picture clipped to it. The picture is of a head. But wait a minute; the same head in the picture is actually a statue in the room to the left. The statue has a concrete color, except for its blue eyes and green leafy hair. Hanging on the wall is an image of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The image is tilted so that the tower is actually not leaning at all. Interesting, isn’t it?
